Overview of the Data
Compustat provides more than 300 annual and 100 quarterly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows, and supplemental data items on more than 24,000 publicly held companies. The Compustat dataset we subscribe to provides us with 20 years of this data up to the most current year. For example, the Compustat data we purchased in 2004 (i.e., the "2003 version") contains data from 1984-2003. There are numerous datasets which together comprise Compustat, and our department does not subscribe to all of them. For more info, see below.
Our Subscription
The Finance and Accounting Departments subscribe to:
- Primary-Supplementary-Tertiary Annual and Quarterly Data
- Full Coverage Annual and Quarterly Data
- Research Annual and Quarterly Data
In addition, some Annual Back Data is available, and we have segment data from 1996-2003. More information on the specific data we have available for research can be found on Mark Trombley's website at: http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/trombley/dbdocs/compustat.html - (Current Window)
Our "Full Coverage" Compustat Subscription includes accounting data on:
- Approximately 22,000 companies (10,152 Active, 10,620 Inactive, 1,138 Canadian)
- Annual data for Active and Inactive companies from 1984 - 2003
- Quarterly data for Active companies from 1993 - 2003
- Segment data for Active companies from 1996 - 2003
How to Access This Data
In the finance department, the Compustat datasets can be accessed using a program such as SAS, directing the program to the SAS datasets on the finance department server in the Z:\compustat\2003\annual or Z:\compustat\2003\quarterly directories. This requires that your PC is mapped to the Finance server. If it is not, email Data Czar about this and he will map the server drive to your computer.
A good starting place for learning how to access Compustat on the Accounting (unix) server is Mark Trombley's Compustat website at http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/trombley/dbdocs/compustat.html - (Current Window)
His website contains information about how to access sample programs for pulling Compustat data. If you need assistance with this, contact Nathan.
If you are new to the department or new to accessing the accounting (unix) server, information about how to get your research account set up can be found at: http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/trombley/dbdocs/setup.html - (Current Window)
Once you have your UA NetID account activated, you'll need to have Mark provide you with permission to access the /fa (Accounting unix) server. To do this, send him an email request at: trombley@email.arizona.edu
Data Czar Notes
New Compustat data is normally acquired each July. The data is placed both on the /fa research server and the finance department server. For more information about how Compustat data is processed, visit Mark Trombley's PC Setup site at http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/trombley/dbdocs/desktop.html - (Current Window) and scroll down to the Compustat section.
