Dual JD/MMF

Dual Juris Doctor/Master of Science in Management with a Concentration in Finance

Students in the full-time JD program of the James E. Rogers College of Law at The University of Arizona campus are eligible to complete dual degree programs with the Eller College of Management Master's in Finance. This program allows students to count certain coursework toward both degree programs, reducing the total number of credit hours and courses required to obtain both degrees.

Students typically complete the first year JD requirements, a fall semester of MMF coursework, followed by the remaining JD and MMF track course requirements, and by the MMF project in the summer after completing the JD program.

Students may elect to complete their Master's in Finance coursework during the three year JD program, or to graduate with the JD degree in May, completing the MMF project over the summer and graduating with the MMF degree in December.

Requirements

The student must apply to and be admitted to both the JD program and the MMF program. Students may apply to the MMF program during the first semester of the JD program.

University policy on dual degrees stipulates that a maximum of 50% of the credit hours for the shorter program may be counted toward both degrees. By agreement, the JD/MMF degree requires a total of 103 units: the 76 units of JD course work, to include 9* units of finance-related law college electives, plus an additional 27 units of required Finance courses, to include 9** units of finance courses applied to the JD requirements.

Summary

JD Degree requirements: 85 units of course work

MMF Degree requirements: 36 units (30 units of course work plus a 6-unit summer project)

However: 9 units of JD finance-related course work can be counted toward the MMF and 9 units of Finance course work can be counted toward the JD.

Therefore, to receive the dual degree, the following are required:

  • For the JD degree:

76 units of course work taken from the JD curriculum*
9 units of 500-level Finance electives (not including FIN 510, FIN 525, or FIN 909)**

85 units meets requirement for the JD degree
  • For the JD/MMF degree: In addition to the above,

12 units in Finance (not including FIN 510)
6 units of MMF Project course work (FIN 909)

    18 units

    103 Total Units
A summary page of the Dual JD/MMF rerequirements is available.

Courses

Specific courses required for the MMF degree depend on the chosen track of study (see Master's in Finance > Curriculum > Tracks). You must meet the requirements of your chosen MMF track.

Exceptions:

  1. FIN510A and FIN510B, Finance, do not count toward the JD or MMF degree.
  2. FIN525, Empirical Financial Methods does not count toward the JD degree.
  3. FIN909, Finance Master's Project does not count toward the JD degree.

Plan of Study

To be considered for a Dual MBA/MMF, you must:

  • Apply to the MMF program during the first semester of the JD program.

  • Draft a Plan of Study outlining your coursework in four categories:
JD (67 units), JD finance-related law electives (9 units), dual JD/MMF finance courses (9 units) and MMF (12 course units plus 6 project units).

The Plan of Study should outline your plans for completing 103 credit hours meeting the requirements above and should be submitted to Kay Ross, Finance Department Program Coordinator no later than early Spring semester of your second year in the JD program.

  • Complete a Change of Degree form by March of your final JD semester showing completion of the JD degree in May and transfer to the MMF program in Summer I, with the expected graduation semester for the MMF degree.
