Dr. Jean Helwege joined the Department as Associate Professor of Finance this fall. Professor Helwege studied the major finance issues of the 1990s as an economist for the Federal Reserve Board and a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York before resuming her academic career at Ohio State in 1998. Throughout the decade, she conducted analyses in the areas of corporate bonds, corporate finance, and savings and loans, including estimating the cost of the S&L bailout and monitoring activity related to mergers and the high-yield bond market. Her scholarly work in leading journals such as Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Current Issues in Economics and Finance continues to advance knowledge in these arenas, examining a broad range of topics, including IPOs in hot and cold markets, credit yield curves for speculative-grade issuers and high-yield bond default rates.
