Doctoral Minor in Finance

Requirements

The Finance Department is happy to work with doctoral students from around The University of Arizona who wish to minor in Finance. Depending on the student's prior knowledge of finance and major interest, there are three alternative tracks to complete the requirements for a minor in finance, each requiring four graduate-level finance courses.

Track 1:

  • FIN600, Theory of Finance
  • FIN696G, Financial Theory (Dynamic Asset Pricing)
  • FIN695A, Investments (Intro Empirics)
  • FIN696E, Corporate Finance

Track 2:

  • FIN600, Theory of Finance

  • One of:
    ACCT/FIN696C, Taxation
    ACCT/FIN696D, Contracts

  • Two of:
FIN696G, Financial Theory (Dynamic Asset Pricing)
    FIN695A, Investments (Intro Empirics)
    FIN696E, Corporate Finance

Track 3:

  • FIN600, Theory of Finance

  • Two of:
FIN696G, Financial Theory (Dynamic Asset Pricing)
    FIN695A, Investments (Intro Empirics)
    FIN696E, Corporate Finance

  • One 500-level (MBA/MMF) finance class
The 500-level class may be chosen based on your interests but is dependent on the availability of seating. The department suggests FIN542 (Fixed Income).

Please note that prerequisite requirements will not be waived. In particular, FIN696G is a prerequisite for and will be required before taking FIN695A.

A minimum grade of B in each would be sufficient for the minor (with no other examination).

No Prior Finance Background

Students wishing to complete a minor in Finance without prior Finance background are required to take FIN 510 before taking any other courses. This course is only offered in the fall semester, specifically for 1/2 of the semester from mid-October to mid-December. Registration is controlled by the Eller College MBA office as the course is intended for the first semester cohort of MBA students. The student and Finance Department Program Coordinator must request approval of the MBA office for registration.

Because of the timing of course offerings, a likely schedule follows:

Fall
Spring
Year 1

FIN 510, Finance

FIN 513, Valuation Modeling
Year 2
FIN 542, Fixed Income

FIN 600, Theory of Finance

Year 3
